We follow a mastery approach to teaching Maths at Middle Barton. This is based around the five key ideas of representation and structure, mathematical thinking, coherence, variation and fluency.
Every lesson is carefully sequenced through a series of small steps, allowing for progression from the children’s prior learning, so that new concepts can be fully mastered. Children are exposed to a wide range of high-quality reasoning and problem-solving opportunities and encouraged to discuss their ideas and challenge each other’s mathematical thinking. Mathematical topics are covered in blocks to enable a really ‘deep’ understanding and ensure that they have mastered the necessary foundations before advancing on to more challenging concepts. Key arithmetic skills are taught daily in order for children to become fluent in the basic number facts they need to know to succeed in maths and make key connections between their areas of learning.
